Mind Your Zot!
Weathering the Weather
It is getting closer to the holiday break and the end is in sight! Soon we will be with family and friends and getting some much-needed relaxation after the start to the quarter! Phew!
While this time can be something to look forward to, it is important to still be aware of caring for your mental health. Here are some things to consider as we reach the end of the year!
Change in weather
Days get shorter, rain/cloudiness may increase, and sunshine lessens as the season changes. Often this can directly affect our mood by making us feel less energetic, and more lethargic. Try to create active goals during this time to keep your body moving!
Light Exposure
We need vitamin D! There are many health benefits to receiving vitamin D and one of the primary ways of doing this is from sun exposure. While we usually have amazing sunshine in southern California, there may be a stretch of days where we do not. Research has shown that light therapy is an effective way in lifting mood so you may consider purchasing a lamp that might provide sufficient light exposure to lift your spirits!
Perspective
Fall quarter tends to be challenging for a lot of students and I am here to tell you that there is a lot of truth to that sentiment! You’re just coming off of an amazing summer, you don’t get a “break” until November, and the time frame between Fall and Winter quarter is very short. Times goes by quickly and before you know it, you’re back in it a few weeks later. Practice some self-compassion and allow your self to be okay with feeling stressed, know you’re not alone, and give yourself time to step away from the student mindset once the quarter is over!
